LITTLE ROCK — Cane Creek State Park has southern Arkansas’ first long mountainbike trail ready for beginners.

But are beginners ready for it?

Inquiring cyclists wanted to know. So at dawn on a warm workday in early June, two hardly habitual off-road bike riders drove south from Little Rock in search of Star City and its adjacent state park. Little did they realize as their car gobbled gasoline for 78 miles that they were headed toward more ups and downs in the Arkansas Delta than they’d encounter in a month’s worth of pedaling along the paved Arkansas River Trail.
